Lemonade (for [info]fivemack and [info]rezendi)

You need a 2 liter jug, a pyrex jug, a lemon squeezer, 2 big or 3 small lemons, 2 limes, 1 orange, a tray of ice, 2 oz of sugar, and lots of cold water. Takes 5-10 minutes.

Put the sugar in the pyrex jug. Boil the kettle. When the kettle boils, cover the sugar with boiling water, stir to dissolve. You don't need to make syrup or anything, but you want the sugar dissolved.

Meanwhile, put the tray of ice into the 2 liter jug. Squeeze the lemons, limes and orange in, getting out all the juice and pulp you can and avoiding adding the pips. Pour the dissolved sugar and water in. Top up with cold water. Shake or stir. Drink, with ice. It'll be cold enough. I used to refrigerate it for a while first, but then I had to make some in a hurry and it was just fine.

This is very refreshing and about as isotonic as you can get. I sometimes add mint or basil to the sugar in the boiling water when I have that growing outside. If it's too sweet, use less sugar next time. I figure this has about a teaspoon of sugar per glass.

The other thing you can do, right now while limes are nine for a dollar, is just squeeze half a lime into your glass of water and ice. Kids won't drink this, but it's good.

A question for the crowd

I named a character once in The Bone Palace, an offhand reference that didn't warrant an entry in the dramatis personae but is still in print. Now I find myself needing to write more about that character and a) not liking his name much anymore, and b) finding it a bit too similar to someone else who shows up quite often. How many of you would be wildly irritated if I changed someone's name between books? (I doubt most people even remember that he was ever mentioned, but somewhere out there is the reader who will.)

I'm going to be a father!

Trillian found this darling house spider and her eggs in one of the cabinets working hard to guard our food! She is part of our army. I did a few macro shots of her egg basket too -- looks like we're about to have 50 babies!!! Cigars for everyone!

She's about the size of a lentil, her eggs might be the size of pinheads.

behind this cut to avoid the freaking out of the people who would freak out if there was a spider in front of this cut )

1890s and 1920s

Today I have been in Borås, a neighbouring town, to the textile Museum to look at parts of their collection of clothes from the 1940s. 50s and 60s for a project idea that I have. But of course that was not the only thing that I saw; for example there was this lovely 1890s jacket:

And this nice 1920s (suit?) jacket )

Sie ist der hellste Stern von allen

Þæt, as they say, wæs god concert. We had great seats, the pyrotechnics were gorgeous--and hot*--and the set list was very nice, even if I would rather have heard "Rosenrot" than "Bück Dich." We had to miss the last encore to get home to the babysitter--the opening whistle of "Engel" chased us into the parking lot, and I'm not sure what they played next. I got to see "Haifisch," though, which I love unreasonably.

They played "Ohne Dich" and it was quite nice, but I'm afraid Laibach did to that song what Johnny Cash did to "Hurt." They'll never top that cover.

That's another concert off my life list. Having seen Leonard Cohen and Concrete Blonde, and given up on Siouxsie or the Creatures, the list is getting short. It would be nice to see Laibach. The rest would need a time machine.

Quick Useful Sandman Slipcase post

A hasty post...

There's a slipcased set of Sandman on the way. It's going to be published in November. I'm so happy. This is something that I have been asking DC to make for a very long time, and I am genuinely thrilled it's going to exist. It will look almost like this. (If you look carefully you'll notice that the final book in the box shown here is not The Wake. That's because that edition of SANDMAN: The Wake has not been published yet.)

(Here's the Amazon listing for it -- they've dropped it from $200 to $125. And I'm sure there are other such deals elsewhere on the web.)

DC are also going to be selling the Slipcase with some copies of The Wake. So if you have the rest of the  books already, you can simply put them into the slipcase.

According to Bleeding Cool, retailers have until this weekend to get their orders in for November to guarantee that they'll get them. So if you want one, either if you want a copy of The Wake with a Slipcase, or the set of all the books, you should talk to your Local Comic Shop now. (How do you find your local comic shop? You could always use http://www.comicshoplocator.com/)

(The current edition of paperbacks contains the same colouring as the Absolute editions, although, obviously not all the extra material in each of the Absolutes. If you already bought the Absolute Sandmans 1-4, feel proud of yourself. You are not required to buy the books again. You are never required to buy again what you already have.)

Frostbite graphic novel is out!

Today's the full release day for the graphic novel version of Frostbite. If you missed my preview of it yesterday, you can check that out here. I've also been told that my local bookstore, University Books, received a huge shipment of them, so if you're interested in ordering an autographed copy, follow the directions that are here. They'll be shipping out their first batch tomorrow, so if you get your order placed by the end of today, you can get in on that shipment! Hope you enjoy the book!

Queer Characters

A reader says, "I've been reading your books since Black Ships and I've read all of them. While I enjoy your Stargate novels, I miss the strong, positive, queer characters from your earlier books. Now it sounds like your upcoming book, The General's Mistress, is a het romance. Is that true?"

Elza, the main character of The General's Mistress, is explicitly bisexual. Like Lydias in Stealing Fire, this is not subtext. This is not context. This is not weasel words. This is not something I'm saying at a con or in my livejournal that most readers will never know about. She has affairs with both men and women, and her scenes with her female lover are just as clear and frank as her scenes with male lovers.

That's one reason my editor made the comparison to Phedre in Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel series. Elza is extremely clear about this, and it's purely her choice. It's not non-consensual or accidental or occasional, or any of the other things that may "excuse" her sleeping with women. Elza sleeps with women the same way she sleeps with men -- because she wants to. And yes, this is historical. The real Elza is very clear in her memoirs that she slept with women as well as men. I hope you enjoy it! I certainly enjoyed writing it.
